The HSUS also has a goal of ending recreational hunting. With deer populations so high, and with hunting revenue so important to the Iowa DNR (partly because they get little other state funding), that’s definitely not a goal I can support. Some of the best conservationists I know are also ethical, responsible hunters. The HSUS doesn’t get donations from me because I don’t support some of their wildlife policies.

Professor Temple Grandin has spoken out against battery cages for hens, and her animal-behavior expertise is nationally known and respected. She is a consultant to the livestock industry and the Meat Institute, and her work has been very influential in the design of slaughterhouses. She was recently named a Fellow in the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers. So I don’t think she can reasonably be accused of having a secret anti-meat agenda. If she has problems with battery cages, then so do I. And so do a lot of consumers, according to recent surveys by the poultry industry.

This would make a WONDERFUL television psa throughout Iowa, and other states. Please continue to bring the voice of reason and common sense to those who longer are connected to the land.

We need to be sure to distinguish between organizations like local Humane Shelters, who can do a lot of good in communities, and HSUS. Too often that difference isn’t made clear, and people consider locals one and the same as HSUS
